Most people do not get enough gelatin in their diets, more specifically collagen. This is especially so with people who do not eat any source of meat. The human body is made up of about 30% collagen which is found in our hair, teeth, bones, nails, cartilage, muscles, and skin.
Gelatin and collagen are also essential to the health of our immune system, endocrine system through hormone production, healthy digestive system, retaining muscle quality and even supporting healthy liver function because gelatin is high in glycine, an essential amino acid.
Once we get into our mid 20’s the collagen production in our bodies begins to decrease. Stress, trauma, disease, harmful chemicals and so on all dramatically contribute to rapid decay of the collagen in our bodies. Premature aging results. The body starts breaking down as our bodies fail to produce proper amounts of collagen. Weakening of bones, teeth, joints, nails and hair all come about from lack of collagen. Our skin looses tone and wrinkles and sagging occurs. The hair becomes brittle and lifeless in appearance. The digestive system weakens in its fiery vigor and food no longer digests properly which leads to inflammation of the digestive tract. The immune system weakens as well with poor digestion and because the lack of collagen congests the liver and depletes normal hormone production of the endocrine system.
Though collagen and gelatin are from the same source, and even gelatin comes out of collagen, they are unique in their own right. While collagen is great for healing and strengthening skin, nails, joints, bones and hair, gelatin is what we need to heal the digestion, immunity, hormone production and liver function. If you have digestive issues and you start consuming lots of high quality collagen you will find the digestion does not heal. However, by consuming high quality gelatin daily it will decrease the inflammation in the digestive system and bring about healing.
One great quick easy way I found to get good amounts of solid quality gelatin in the diet is by making your own jello. I like the Zint brand of beef gelatin.
- 5 cups room temp water
- 2 cups hot water – just under the boiling point
- ½ teaspoon of pure salt – pickling or kosher salt works well
- 2/3 cup of organic brown sugar (you can use raw honey as well)
- 5 tablespoons gelatin
Dissolve the gelatin powder into the 1.5 cups of room temp water. Once thoroughly dissolved slowly pour in the hot water. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir well. Pour into a 9x7x2 inch glass pan. Set in the refrigerator uncovered until solid. Cover and keep refrigerated.
Makes about 11 one and three quarter square blocks.
The gelatin is great for everything stated above. The salt is required for proper and optimal thyroid and metabolism function. The brown sugar is a blood builder and helps to also sooth the stomach energy and health. And of course I have spoken a lot about the wonderful health benefits of honey!
This is a wonderful healthy and convenient snack for anytime of the day. You can experiment by adding organic jams and fruits (which sink to the bottom), shredded coconut (which floats on the top) and anything else you wish to try. You can even add a can of whole fat coconut milk to the mix, which adds another perfect health ingredient and highly beneficial saturated fat.
